TEMBO HOUSE HOTEL

The Tembo House Hotel is situated in the heart of Stone Town on the beach overlooking the old Stone Town harbour. The hotel is a short, 10 to 15 minutes’ drive from the airport.

The Tembo House Hotel has many antique furniture pieces and ornaments from all over the world on display. Where else can you enjoy a night’s rest on an antique Swahili bed and run your hands over finely carved wooden furniture? These features ensure that visitors to Tembo always wish to return to this Zanzibar refuge from another era.

Most of the rooms have balconies overlooking the beach or the swimming pool courtyard. Each bedroom is self contained, air conditioned, equipped with a fridge, telephone and satellite television.

MBWENI RUINS HOTEL

On the outskirts of Stone Town, on the beach, is a magnificent garden. Within this secluded enclave nestles the Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins.

Mbweni Ruins effortlessly blends the living experience of Zanzibar`s historic past with modern-day luxury and comfort. Here, the weary visitor can relax and pamper himself whilst enjoying nature’s true beauty.

Mbweni Ruins offers 13 air-conditioned suites; each furnished in distinctive Zanzibari style, with oriental rugs, mosquito-nets and four poster-beds, which echo the many cultural flavours that have influenced the Swahili Coast.

The Baobob Suite is perfect for honeymooners. This spacious suite, complete with king-sized four-poster bed, has its own rooftop terrace with spectacular views over the ocean, the ruins and the garden, which is vibrant with the colours of frangipani, hibiscus and oleander.

The rooms are situated in a picturesque setting dotted with palm trees and a kaleidoscope of exotic plant life. Each suite is located close to the attractive swimming pool and secluded beach and has a balcony overlooking the sea.

Paths though the gardens lead to the cliff-top where the bar and Raintree Restaurant are situated, offering refreshing drinks, excellent cuisine and impressive views over the grounds and the Indian Ocean. From the terrace of the Sundowner Bar, guests can gaze at the spectacular sunset whilst sipping a gin and tonic, a Pimms or our uniquely blended Zanzibar punch. Alternatively, we stock a variety of East African beers, cocktails and a selection of South African wines..

The Raintree Restaurant provides a full English breakfast, combined with a buffet of Island fruits, yoghurt and cereals. Freshly-squeezed fruit juices and a selection of herbal teas are also available. For lunch, guests can sample one of our specially prepared salads or explore our extensive menu, using fresh market produce and featuring seafood specialities from the Indian Ocean. On Sundays we serve a traditional colonial-style buffet lunch. Afternoon tea, complete with home-baked scones, is served daily at 4pm.

Our table d’hôte dinner menus offer a combination of European cuisine and Zanzibar flair and spice and include vegetarian options. We are happy to accommodate any special requests.

 

MAPENZI BEACH RESORT

Set on the east coast of Zanzibar, about 45 km from the airport, Mapenzi Beach Club perfectly blends into the surrounding landscape and covers an area of 4 hectares. A prized feature of Mapenzi is the long, white pristine beach coupled to the tropical garden of palms and colorful bougainvillea.

MATEMWE BUNGALOWS

The north-east part of Unguja (one of the two main islands of Zanzibar) is known as Matemwe. Here, in harmony with the environment and in co-operation with the local people, Matemwe Bungalows was built to offer you a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement.

The rural north-east coast of Zanzibar is well-known for its fine weather and natural beauty. After years of loving care the garden of Matemwe Bungalows forms a small oasis in this otherwise dry scrub bush land.

Matemwe Bungalows has 14 en-suite bungalows built from local materials, each with a personal touch. All the rooms, as well as the restaurant directly overlook the Indian Ocean. You can enjoy the comings and goings of the local ‘Ngalawa fishing fleet from the comfort of your private veranda or from the restaurant.

 

The eight self-contained rooms and six suites have lighting and hot water both powered by the sun. All rooms have private verandas where you can laze in your own hammocks. Although mosquito’s are rare in Matemwe, all rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net. The suites have large king-size beds especially suited for honeymooners. An extra single bed makes them also suitable for small families.

Matemwe Bungalows' six (honeymoon) suites are of a large, open space design incorporating such features as louvered windows, a raised double bed and a spacious veranda complete with hammock. Coconut wood fixtures and fittings give an exotic feel to the suites. Honeymoon couples receive complementary champagne and flowers in their room. For the truly romantic: why not go the whole way and get married on Matemwe beach? Wedding ceremonies can be conducted by prior arrangement.

Seafood is the speciality of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses between meat, fish and vegetarian. The "catch of the day" might actually be yours!

Matemwe bungalows new beach bar is built around an old dhow adjacent to the beach under the palm trees. The bar has comfortable, locally made sofas, chairs, loungers and coffee/drinks tables. A selection of games is available.

For those who need to keep in contact with the world outside, we offer internet and telephone/fax facilities in out main building. Matemwe Bungalows arranges water safaris with full high range equipment which enables you to enjoy the local reef and discover Mnemba Atoll in a relaxed and informative manner.
